The Role of the Insurgent States in Kurdish National Movement

This paper studies the phenomenon of insurgent states and the possibilities for extrapolating this political paradigm to the Kurdish national movement. The author states that it is highly unlikely for an insurgent state to emerge as a result of social, stage, dialectical or political development. An insurgent state is primarily a political phenomenon that results from traumatic events such as civil war, intervention, revolution, coups d'état, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia. Each insurgency manifests in crisis of statehood and fragmentation of political space, which may also be caused by internal factors. The Kingdom of Kurdistan, led by Mahmoud Barzanji and his rebels in 1919–1924, was an insurgent state that fought against the Ottoman Empire and British colonial rule. Its insurgent traditions have been extrapolated to recent insurgencies in Kurdistan such as the Ararat Republic in 1930, the Dersim Rebellion in Turkey in 1937–1938, and the September Uprising led by Moustafa Barzani in Iraq in 1961.
