The 4th Moscow scientific conference "Asia and Africa at the Crossroads of Traditions, Modernization, and Globalization" was held on the 15th of December 2021 in Moscow, at the Institute of Oriental Studies (the Russian Academy of Sciences). The organizer was the Research Center of the Modern East General Issues (the Institute of Oriental Studies).

The Research Center of the Modern East General Issues holds the annual Moscow scientific conference "Asia and Africa at the Crossroads of Traditions, Modernization, and Globalization" on a regular basis. Within the framework of the conference  a round table was held "The East in a Changing World: Challenges, Prospects, and Solutions". This discussion platform makes it possible for specialists from various fields of scientific knowledge (history, political science, religious studies, and economics) exchanging opinions. The conference was attended by representatives of academic institutions (the Institute of Oriental Studies,  the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of the Far-East), lecturers from Russian the  universities (the Institute of Asia and Africa of Moscow State University, Russian State University for the Humanities, Higher School of Economics, National Research State University of Nizhny Novgorod, named after. N.I. Lobachevsky). 22 scientific reports were heard at the conference.

Topical issues related to the controversial process of the modern system of international relations development were discussed at this scientific event.

The speakers analyzed regional conflicts in Asia and Africa and identified the role of non-regional and non-state actors in their settlement. The speakers showed the influence of developed countries on the traditional societies of Asia and Africa. Particular attention was paid to the climatic factor in the Asian countries ecological and economic modernization. The researchers especially emphasized the role of barrier-free access to high technologies and the results of scientific and technological progress, as well as fair competition from the main participants in ensuring the economies stable development of the Eastern countries. The conference touched upon the topic of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Asian countries and its socio-economic consequences. Considerable attention at the meeting was paid to the religious aspect of modern Eastern states existence.
