International Conference «The Fifths V.G. Rastyannikov’s Readings»: The Increasing role of the BRICS Group and Partner Countries in the Global Economy and Politics

On March 17-21, 2025, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted the International Conference «The Fifths V.G. Rastyannikov’s Readings»: The Increasing role of the BRICS Group and Partner Countries in the Global Economy and Politics. The International Conference was organized by the Center for S&T Cooperation and Agrarian Research, Department of Economic Research at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The conference was attended by over 200 experts from Russia and various other countries. A total of 130 reports were presented during the plenary session and eight specialized sessions.
At the opening of the conference and the plenary session, issues related to the expansion of BRICS and the role of the association in shaping a polycentric world order were discussed. In the speeches of the Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Historical Sciences A.K. Alikberov and the Deputy Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, Doctor of Political Sciences V.A. Kuznetsov, the direction of research on the role of BRICS in the global economy was established, highlighting the need for a pluralistic approach to analyzing relationships both within the BRICS group and with other countries in the global community. Their assessments set the tone for the subsequent discussion.
The speakers included researchers from various universities and research institutions across the Russian Federation, such as the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Asian and African Studies at Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Presidential Council of Sciences. Other notable institutions represented were MGIMO University of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Institute of China and Modern Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Latin America of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg University, the Higher School of Economics (St. Petersburg), Sevastopol State University, I.A. Bunin Yelets State University, Lobachevsky University of the National Research University of the Russian Federation, the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, RIEPP, INION RAS, Yaroslavl State University, RUDN University (Patrice Lumumba), Kazan Federal University, RGGU, the Russian Customs Academy, Samara State University, and I.S. Turgenev Oryol State University.
The conference was attended by scientists and researchers from universities and research institutions in India, China, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Bolivia, Gambia, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.

- Resource potential of the BRICS+ group and partner countries
- The role of information and communication technologies and artificial intelligence
- The BRICS+ group and food security
- Monetary and financial aspects of international cooperation

Summing up the results of the International Conference «The Fifths V.G. Rastyannikov’s Readings»: The increasing role of the BRICS Group and partner countries in the global economy and politics, it is noteworthy that there was significant interest from the academic community regarding the impact of BRICS on the formation of a new multipolar world order. The conference provided an opportunity to reflect on the diverse approaches to assessing the role of BRICS in the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The international conference was held in a hybrid format, combining in-person and online participation. A system of simultaneous interpretation was provided for participants, ensuring seamless information reception and facilitating active interaction in discussions among attendees from various countries. Presentations were delivered in both Russian and English, which broadened the audience and the diversity of the research presented.

The Organizing Committee expresses its deep gratitude to the researchers and scholars who participated with presentations and actively engaged in discussions, as well as to everyone who contributed to the organization of the Conference. Special recognition is extended to Alexey V. Bavrin, Ph.D. student at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Ekaterina A. Vorobyeva, a third-year student at the Faculty of History of Lomonosov Moscow State University, for their professional simultaneous interpretation of participants' presentations, which ensured seamless interaction among Conference attendees and deepened scientific dialogue.
At the conference, China expert Svetlana Nikiforovna Alexakhina delivered a presentation titled «BRICS and the Idea of Reviving the Great Tea Road» and conducted a Chinese tea ceremony, offering participants a unique opportunity to personally experience the rich flavor diversity of Chinese tea from various provinces, prepared through different fermentation methods. During the tea ceremony, attendees savored the smoky notes of «Big Red Robe», experienced the floral freshness with the buttery-cream tones of «Iron Bodhisattva Guanyin», immersed themselves in the bready Dian Hong with its dried fruit undertones and pleasant berry tartness, and indulged in the intense emerald infusion from the «Dragon Well».
