Art in the East and East in the Art (AEEA II): Expanding the Boundaries of the Ecumene

 
Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IOS RAS), State Museum of Oriental Art (SMO) and Faculty of Oriental Studies, State Academic University for the Humanities (GAUGN), Faculty of Humanities Higher School of Economics (HSE) invite you to participate in the Second International Academic Conference «ART IN THE EAST AND EAST IN THE ART (AEEA II): EXPANDING THE BOUNDARIES OF THE ECUMENE».

The second AEEA conference “Expanding the boundaries of the Ecumene” will work in the format of round tables and respective panels. As in the previous year AEEA-II will bring together scholars from museums of Asian and African art and researchers from academic institutions and universities studying actual topics and different periods of Eastern and African art, as well as mirroring and/or echoing processes in the West.

The main theme of the conference will be migration and transformation of images and topics from the West to the East and from the East to the West, the interaction of nomadic and sedentary cultures, the phenomenon of “proto-globalization” in visual arts, emergence and material culture of the cities and settlements in the cultural intersections of ancient and medieval East.

The conference will be accompanied by two exhibitions: «Academic Portrait» and «Treasures from the Private Collections of Asian Scholars».

Information about the conference and related publications

The conference «Art in the East and East in the Art II» will be held both online and offline on June 05th–07th, 2023 at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences: Moscow, Rozhdestvenka st., 12.

The Organizing Committee encourages any ideas and suggestions for holding possible exhibitions, series of lectures, film screenings and events during the conference.

We expect to discuss the following topics:

  1. Round table “Cross motifs and nomadic images in art and culture of the ancient and medieval East”

Panel “East Meets West: Migration of images and the problem of cultural transfer”

  1. Round table “Ancient Urban Studies: General and specific in the culture of settlements and cities”

Panel “From a settlement to the city: New discoveries and modern approaches”

  1. Round table “Comparative iconography as a method of studying Hellenistic cultures”

Panel “West Meets East: The problem of cultural diffusion in the Hellenistic era”

  1. Special Round table “Art as a historical source”
  2. Special Round table “The influence of Japonisme on the European New Art”

The program will be formed according to the submitted applications (by June 1st), following which the program and the accepted abstracts will be published prior to the opening of the Conference.

Travel accommodation and expenses are expected to be covered by the participant.

Selected papers will be published in a special issue of the Oriental Courier journal (your contributions should be sent to AEEA.conference@gmail.com by August 1, 2023).
