On December 12th, 2019, the 12-th International Conference of the Japanese Studies Association “Research of Japan in the Modern Russia: to the 25th Anniversary of the Japanese Studies Association” was held at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Japanese Studies Center of the Institute of Oriental Studies participated in its organization.

T. Kodzuki, the Ambassador of Japan to Russia, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech at the conference opening, emphasizing the important role of the Japanese Studies Association in the development of Russian-Japanese relations and strengthening mutual understanding between the two countries. Also D.V. Streltsov made a speech at the plenary session, he is the current Chairman of the Association, as well as other leading Russian scientists involved in the study of Japan.

The conference was attended by researchers from the leading scientific centers and universities of Moscow - the Institute of Oriental Studies , IMEMO RAS, MGIMO University, Russian State University for the Humanities, the Institute of Asian and African Studies of MSU, HSE University, and others. In addition to scientists from Moscow, the conference was attended by researchers from other cities of Russia and Japan, among which were Professor V.G. Datsyshen, the Head of the Department of general history of the Siberian Federal University (Krasnoyarsk), Professor A.V. Filippov, the Head of the Department of Oriental Studies, St. Petersburg State University, E.E. Voytishek, the Head of the Department of Oriental Studies, Novosibirsk State University.

The conference included the sections “History and Culture of Japan”, “Foreign and Domestic Politics of Japan”, “Economics and Society of Japan”, and “Problems of the Historical Past in the Socio-Political Discourse of Modern Japan”.

In the section “Problems of the Historical Past in the Socio-Political Discourse of Modern Japan”, apart from other speeches, a number of reports were presented prepared under the grant of the Russian Science Foundation “Problems of the Historical Past in Japan’s Relations with East Asia and Russia. Lessons for Russia ”(No. 19-18-00017). The reports were named “Issues of the Historical Past in Russian-Japanese Relations” (D.V. Streltsov), “Preserving the Memory on the Japanese Colonial Past in Russian territory: Karafuto Governorate and Sakhalin Region” (S.V. Grishachev), “Problems of the Military Past in the Political Discourse of Modern Japan ”(V.V. Nelidov), "Problems of Military Japanese Studies in the Amur Military District” (V.G. Datsyshen), and some other speeches.
