The ceremony took place during the first meeting of the newly elected Academic Council of the Institute of Oriental Studies.

I.F. Gafurov, Professor, Rector of Kazan Federal University, was awarded solemnly the degree of "Doctor Honoris Causa of the Institute of Oriental Studies.” Mr. Gafurov was presented with a diploma and a mantle. 

V.V. Naumkin, Academician, Scientific Director of the Institute, and A.K. Alikberov, Director of the Institute, Doctor of History, noted in their speeches to the audience the importance of Kazan Federal University and the personal contribution of its rector Ilshat Gafurov in the Russian oriental studies development and in the training of young science specialists. 

Mr. Gafurov, thanked the Academic Council of the Institute of Oriental Studies in his "response" for such a high assessment of his modest contribution to Russian oriental studies. At the same time he expressed hope for further fruitful cooperation with the Institute of Oriental Studies, talking of the Kazan Federal University achievements at the moment.
