Mark Golman (1927 - 2021)

 
The Department of Korea and Mongolia informs with deep regret that Mark Golman has passed away on September the 5th, 2021, after a long illness at the age of 93.

He was a famous Russian Mongolian scholar, Chief Scientific Researcher and Consultant of the Mongolia Sector of the Department of Korea and Mongolia of the Institute of Oriental Studies (the Russian Academy of Sciences), Doctor of Historical Sciences, Honorary Doctor of the Institute of History and Ethnology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, teacher, translator, our colleague and friend.

Mr. Golman had worked at the Institute of Oriental Studies for over 60 years. He headed the Mongolia Sector of the Korea and Mongolia Division in the years 1996-2004. He devoted almost his entire adult life to the study of Mongolia. He loved this country greatly, he studied it deeply. Mr. Golman traveled a lot around the country, and visited all its aimags, and he had many Mongolian friends.

M. Golman had been one of the leading Russian Mongol scholars for many years. He was a prominent specialist in the history and historiography of Mongolia, the history  of Mongolian studies development in the United States and the West, and the history of the Russian-Mongolian relations in the 17th-21st centuries. He was an author of 5 individual and about 10 collective monographs, almost 200 scientific articles, compiler and editor of several collections of archival documents. Three of his monographs had been translated into Mongolian, English, and Chinese, including two monographs "The Study of of Mongolia History in the West" and
“Mongolian Studies in the West (centers, personnel, societies). 50s-mid 90s of the 20th century” were published in China in two editions.

Mark Golman taught at the Institute of Asia and Afriva at Moscow State University, the Military Institute. He was a member of the Secretariat of the Mongolian Studies International Association, a member of the Russian Society of Mongolian Studies, the Society of Mongolia Friends.

The merits of M. Golman in the development of Mongolian studies and strengthening of Mongolian-Russian friendship were marked with high awards of Mongolian Government: the Order of the Polar Star, the Medal of Friendship, the commemorative medal "Khubilai", etc.
Mark Golman's contribution to the national and world Mongolian studies was highly appreciated in Russia, Mongolia and abroad.

M.I. Golman was an open, cheerful, sociable person, he was the soul of the department team. He loved poetry, he composed wonderful poetic congratulations and dedications to colleagues and friends. For many years he was the permanent trade union organizer of the department.

The departure of M. Golman is a great loss for the staff of Korea and Mongolia Department, the Institute of Oriental Studies, for Russian and the world Mongolian studies. The bright memory of him will remain in his scientific works, as well as in the hearts of his many colleagues, students and friends.
