Report by E.Yu. Goncharov and O.I. Khoruzhenko "Archival Find on the Juchid Coins: Document of 1716"

Report by E.Yu. Goncharov and O.I. Khoruzhenko Report by E.Yu. Goncharov and O.I. Khoruzhenko "Archival Find on the Juchid Coins: Document of 1716"

The report was presented on the description of the Golden Horde coins. This descriptive material was compiled at the beginning of the 18th century. The report was held in a mixed full-time and correspondence format on September the 15th, 2021, in the Department of Literary Monuments of the Peoples of the East of the Institute of Oriental Studies.

Mr. Goncharov, academic secretary, the research associate of the Department of Literary Monuments of the Peoples of the East of the Institute of Oriental Studies, and Mr. Khorujhenko,  talked about their study of a document dated by the year 1716.

The document is kept at the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts. It describes 24 silver and copper Golden Horde coins. At present, it is the oldest document in Russian language with a translation of oriental coins legends. The main two research issues were:
1. Where the coins presented in the document were found?
2. Who could read them?

According to the report authors, the coins were most probably found in the Selitrennoye settlement in the present-day Astrakhan region. Murtaza Tevkelev, the Ambassadorial order translator, read the coins most likely. He was involved in the same work in 1740.
