On the Day of Science with New Discoveries!
A detailed “List of Russian Geographical Names in Oceania” of 129 Russian place names in Oceania has been presented. It indicates who, when and in honor of whom gave this or that name to geographical objects.
For the first time in Russian science, in the tenth chapter, co-authored by N.N. Miklukho-Maclay and E.V. Talk, collective monograph "Russian Civilizational Heritage: Russian Toponyms in the South Pacific" (Editors: E.M. Astafieva, S.E. Pale; Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2021 – 262 p.) presents a detailed "List of Russian Geographical Names in Oceania" of the 129 Russian toponyms in Oceania, indicating who, when and in honor of whom gave this or that name to a geographical object, including their modern names, exact coordinates and information on their political and administrative affiliation.
It is possible to see now on the electronic map the presented 129 toponyms.
The book is intended both for a wide range of readers interested in history, geography, traveling, and the political situation in the South Pacific region. The book is as well for a narrow circle of specialists working in this sphere, including persons in the diplomatic service and employees of government ministries and departments.
The “List of Russian Geographical Names in Oceania” given in the 10th Chapter of the book is relevant for use in the work on the creation of the “Atlas of the World of Russian Geographical Names”. The specialized organizations have begun working on this Atlas in the year 2018 on behalf of the Board of Trustees Chairman of the Russian Geographical Society.
