Alexander Vorontsov, the Head of Korea and Mongolia Department of the Institute of Oriental Studies (the Russian Academy of Sciences) made a report at a round table on the 17th of March, 2022, prepared by Russian International Affairs Council and "Russia Segodnia".

Mr. Vorontsov's speech was on the presidential elections results in South Korea, this state reaction to the special military operation of Russia in the Ukraine, and the prospects for Russian-Korean relations during the current crisis.

The main discussion topics were:

  • The results of South Korea's presidential elections that were conducted on the 9th of March 2022. The candidate from the main opposition party "People's Power" Yun Suk Yeol had won. Mr. Yun Suk Yeol stands for strengthening allied relations with the United States.
  • South Korea has joined a wide range of anti-Russian sanctions recently due to Russian special operation in the Ukraine and geopolitical contradictions intensification in relations between Russia and the West, although Seoul had adhered previously to a more cautious policy.
  • What foreign policy will the new Korean administration pursue? What kind of relationship will Russia and South Korea have? Will there be space for practical interaction under sanctions?

  • Alexander Vorontsov, the Head of Korea and Mongolia Department of the Institute of Oriental Studies (the Russian Academy of Sciences), Associate Professor of Oriental Studies Department at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia);
  • Ilya Dyachkov, Associate Professor of Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, and Mongolian Languages Department (Moscow State University of Foreing Affairs of Russia);
  • Konstantin Asmolov, the Leading Researcher of the Korean Studies Center of the Far-East Institute (the Russian Academy of Sciences);
  • Lyudmila Zakharova, the Scientific Secretary of the Far-East Institute (the Russian Academy of Sciences), Associate Professor of the World Economy Department (Moscow State University of Foreing Affairs of Russia).
