The international online conference “Russia in the South Seas Region. The Practice of Preserving the Historical, Cultural and Scientific Heritage” between Russia and Cambodia was held on the 23rd of March, 2022.

The event was conducted within the  international project framework "Russia in the South Seas". The project purpose is strengthening the scientific, cultural, and humanitarian ties, and developing intercultural dialogue between Russia and the South-East Asia countiries.

Nikolai Miklukho-Maclay, Founder and Director of the Foundation Miklukho-Maclay, the Head the Study Center of the South Pacific Region, Research Fellow at the Center for Southeast Asia in Australia, and Oceania, Institute of Oriental Studies (the Russian Academy of Sciences), President of the Researchers Association of the South Pacific Region, opened and moderated the conference. 

Mr. Miklukho-Maclay noted during his speech that 126 had people registered for the event, more than 80% of the participants were from Cambodia, the rest were from Russia, Uzbekistan, Angola, Serbia, and Papua New Guinea.

Anatoly Borovik, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Cambodia, delivered a welcoming speech at the conference opening. Mr. Borovik expressed confidence in strengthening trade and economic ties and creating conditions to stimulate business activity between Russia and Cambodia. He also noted the cooperation deepening in the humanitarian sphere, education and culture, the youth contacts intencification.

At the event the participants exchanged contacts for cooperation and friendly ties development.

The speakers thanked the Miklouho-Maclay Foundation as the organizing organization. Then the Foundation Director noted that the reports level and the participants number exceeded all possible expectations due to partners' active participation in the conference. Cambodia and Russia have many areas for cooperation and mutual interests development based on mutual respect and trust.

The project does not end at this point. Three more conferences will be held in future.

The following organizations helped to organize the event: Study Center of the South Pacific Region of the Institute of Oriental Studies (the Russian Academy of Sciences), the Miklukho-Maclay Foundation, the Researchers Association  of the South Pacific Region, with the support of the A.M. Gorchakov, the Russian House in Phnom Penh, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation, Rossotrudnichestvo, the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg.
