Expeditions of Three Centuries
For a month and a half, from the 7th of July to the 20th of August 2022, the exhibition "Expedition of Three Centuries" was held in Kronstadt (the city-port of Saint-Petersburg).
The expedition was dedicated to the scientific research of the Maclay Coast in the northeast of the New Guinea island. The presented photos and material culture objects were visited by more than 6,000 people. The exposition colorfully told about national expeditions to the Maclay Coast.
Exhibition organizers:
- Kronstadt History Museum
- South Pacific Region Study Center of the Southeast Asia of Australia and Oceania Center (Institute of Oriental Studies)
- Miklouho-Maclay Foundation
According to Nikolai Miklukho-Maclay Jr., the exhibition organizer and the collection owner, the Head of the South Pacific Region Study Center of the Southeast Asia of Australia and Oceania Center (Institute of Oriental Studies) and the Head of the Miklouho-Maclay Foundation, the exposition, which includes household items common on the Maclay Coast, for the first time showed through unique photographs an example of unique traditions preservations of indigenous people.
The exhibition also clearly demonstrated the significant contribution the national researchers have made to the study of this unique planet corner.
The key role at the exhibition was assigned to N.N. Miklukho-Maclay, the great Russian scientist-humanist and his expedition of the year 1871, which actually “discovered” the northeastern coast of the New Guinea island of the Papuans to the outside world.
The researcher gave a detailed description of their life and, which is very important, using their example, debunked the conjectures of that time some European scientists on the dark-skinned races inferiority. He emphasized in his writings the unacceptability of the cultures forcible suppression, the alien stereotypes imposing, the implementation of forced cultural integration and colonial policy.
The exhibition location symbolically connects us with the N.N. Miklukho-Maclay first journey. The outstanding Russian humanist scientist set sail from Kronstadt in the year 1871.
